I haven't felt much like blogging of late, but I would be remiss if I failed to mention that my baby was finally delivered yesterday:

Yes, I'm the proud owner of the seven-disc deluxe edition of Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of The Worlds.  Oh, baby!  And is it ever "deluxe."  For once, a U.S. music label didn't scrimp on the packaging.  Like a lavish coffee table book, the 12.5x12.5 package houses all seven discs in individual slots with individual cardboard sleeves.  There's also a lavish full-color 80-page section printed on heavy stock glossy paper featuring background information, lyrics, pictures, and detailed notes on all the extras.  It's great seeing all the original paintings printed on 12x12 glossy paper -- no squinting at CD-sized graphics!

Besides that, the 5.1 SACD mix of the album is amazing.  It's an immersive sound field, with only enough discrete effects to remind you that it's a 5.1 mix.  I was amazed at how clear and precise the mix now sounds -- thank the gods for hi-rez audio!  Ulla!!!  I haven't slogged my way through the three discs of outtakes, but I did watch the so-so 90-minute documentary.  And, of course, the remix disc (many of which I already had).  The only "problem" after all is said and done is that this is basically an irreplaceable set.  Looks like I'm going to "have" to order the bare bones 2-disc version so as to preserve this set.  Sigh.

Hmmm...  I wonder if there's a Martian equivalent to the Favorite Bear of the Moment...
